5 Tips for Picture-Perfect Family Photos
Good morning, friends! It’s Monday, and you know what that means—time to Start the Week Off, SWEET! Here at Sweetside Photography, Mondays are our favorite day to plan joyful family memories. To help you kick off this week with cozy smiles and frame-worthy moments, here are five quick and easy tips for your next family photography session.
1: Coordinate, Don't Match
You don’t need identical outfits to look great together.
• Limit printed garments to just one person, usually the Mom, then build a palette of 2–3 complementary colors (think soft cream, dusty rose, and sage green)that will compliment the chosen print. This makes wardrobe choices just a little less overwhelming.
• Let each person choose a piece in one of those hues—such as, jeans + a blush sweater or a floral dress + neutral cardigan. Keep comfort in mind when choosing outfits, especially, for younger children. A uncomfortable toddler is less likely to cooperate.
This gives you a cohesive look without feeling too “matchy.”
2: Embrace Golden Hour Magic
The hour just before sunset bathes everything in warm, golden light.
• Book your session about 45 minutes before sunset
• Book a location with open fields, tree-lined paths, or a quiet park bench
• Relax and let the light (and your photographer)do the work—your photographs will feel dreamy and nostalgic
3: Bring Simple Props
Props can bring out genuine smiles—no stress required!
• A cozy blanket to snuggle under
• String lights or a small chalkboard sign
• Bubbles for the little ones to chase
Your photographer should always open to bringing props to the session, as props enhance your photos, not distract. Pick one or two that reflect your family’s personality and reap the benefits of a style that is your own. There is also nothing wrong with going prop-less, it's all about preference.
4: Let Kids Lead The Way
Staged poses are fine, but candid shots capture real emotion.
• Ask your children to whisper a joke in each other’s ears
• Play “Follow the Leader” down a scenic path
• Simply walk hand-in-hand and chat about favorite ice-cream flavors, a new movie they want to see or their excitement for an upcoming event. The goal is to make their faces light up.
When kids are having fun, you get those sweet, unguarded expressions and those make for the best candid shots!
5: End With A Group Hug
It sounds simple—and that’s the point!
• Gather everyone for one big squeeze
• Lean in close and breathe together
• Let me snap the shot as you share a moment of love
Your family will feel connected, and the photo will radiate warmth that will be felt every time you see the photo
